December Book & Meeting

So New Moon was great fun. I think we all agree it turned out to be much better than Twilight. Eclipse comes out this summer so that's something to look forward to.
The Hunger Games was the book for November, if you haven't read it yet, I highly recommend it.

This month's book is Austenland by Shannon Hale. It's a different take on Pride & Prejudice.

Since it's now officially the holidays, and our weekends are soon to be super busy, book club will be early in the month.
Here's the run down
Saturday December 5th @ 6:00pm @ Aimee Lyman's house. More info. TBA.
Hope to see you all there!

1 YR ANNIVERSARY GJ BOOK CLUB!

Happy 1 yr anniversary to the GJ girls book club! We've read a variety of books thus far, and have had lots of good fun and conversation at our meetings!

Last year our first book club meeting was lunch @ Olive Garden & Twilight. We have all been waiting anxiously for New Moon, and it's just a couple of weeks away!

Here's the run down for book club mtg. this month.

Get your New Moon tickets early. I think Fandango is typically where you can purchase tickets.

Saturday November 21st, 4:00pm @ Jonny Carino's. We plan on getting to the theaters an hour early so that hopefully we can all sit together, but it's opening weekend so you never know. Hope to see you all there!

November's Book (Jen)

Thank you Ann for hosting book club last month! We had a great time hanging out and playing games. The Physick Book of Deliverence Dane for those who read it proved to be a good read.

Since the new rule of being able to choose books you have read before, I decided to choose the Hunger Games. This book is the first of a trilogy, that will have you hooked. I loved this book, and I'm looking forward to seeing what you all think it.

I can't believe that it's already October! The days are flying past. I'm excited for the book choice this month. It's a good one since this is the month for magic, & witches as Halloween quickly approaches. We send out a warm welcome to Jillian who is the newest member of our book club. We're so happy to have you!

Mark your calendars...book club will be Oct. 17th @ 6:30pm. Anne Harvey will host this month. See y'all then!

September's Book (Julia's pick)

August has come and gone. I think that most of us agreed that StarDust was a fun book to read. It was a nice breather after the last couple of deep thinkers we read. We all enjoyed watching the movie as well...it was too funny.

This month's book is My Antonia by Willa Cather. Book club meeting time and place TBD. Happy Reading!

Here Julia's Bio:

Hi I am Julia and I actually love reading more than most other things in life! I was always the one in English class who actually liked the required reading! Only in English though, not Biology, (that's boring!!) I am a busy mother of two boys (6 and 4) and I also love hiking, drawing, playing legos, playing video games, and I am learning to quilt. I really haven't had time to read much so I am enjoying the book club and read the books when I can. I picked "My Antonia" by Willa Cather for August because my little sister loved it and I want to read it so badly.

Aubrey Shawcroft's Bio

Hi! I'm Aubrey Shawcroft. I've been married for 5 years to Aaron Osborne, who is also my best friend and love of my life. Together we made Evelyn Joy, who is now 11 weeks old. That time just flew by! I could have a degree in English Literature from Mesa State but next week, I am starting school again to obtain my teaching certificate in English with an emphasis in Secondary Education. Better to graduate with something useful. After I finish that, I plan to hit Graduate school to specialize in Library Science. Ultimately, I want to be a librarian in a school. I love kids, and teenagers, but I don't want to have to deal with parents and time consuming lesson planning.
When I have free time, you can find me with my nose buried in a book. Usually a romance, because brain candy is a good thing especially when I read really heavy stuff for school all the time. Also, romances are fast! I can usually finish one in a few hours. Romances always have happy endings too. I also love Fantasy novels when I want to read something with more substance. When I am not reading, I enjoy playing video games, playing with Evelyn, attempting to sing on Rock Band with Aaron, cooking and baking, and just spending time with my family here in town.
I chose to make you all read Stardust by Niel Gaiman because for one, I love everything he has written and have never read that one, I've had it on my bookshelf for about a year but I keep reading other things instead. If y'all have time, read American Gods, its flipping fantastic. I loved the movie, and I tend to watch it at least once a month. I just haven't read it. I enjoyed it immensely and it is totally going to be re-read many, many times. Also, I chose it because I expected it to be funny, and not depressing like the books that were recently chosen- you know who you are! I felt that the bookclub needed a pick-me-up after those!

August Book (Aubrey Shawcroft's pick)

This month's book is Stardust by Neil Gaimen (rhymes with Neil Diamond, only the latter is a singer not an author.) Book club will meet Saturday August 22nd, 6:30 at Rebecca Liggett's home. Since we all will have read Stardust by our next meeting...we will have fun visiting, talking about the book, and watching the movie version of this fun book! See you then.

July's Book and Bio

Jennifer H.'s Bio:

HI! I am a friend of Rebecca's in good 'ole Iowa. She used to be my neighbor until she had to move away from me and make life on the street boring. :-)I have two kids (6 and 11) a hubbie and a dog. I work full time as a Technology Coordinator in a school district and I am addicted to Facebook. My goal is to start spending less recreational time inside my laptop and more inside a book. I used to read tons but haven't done enough for a long time! So I am excited to get back on track!I picked My Sister's Keeper as this month's book. I picked it because I really enjoy Jodi Picoult's writing and because I am interested in the topic of this book. I have a daughter that selfishly makes decisions everyday in regards to her brother with special needs...so of course this topics seems to interest me.

Happy Reading!

Ricci's Bio

I have been married to my wonderful and sweet husband for almost 3 years now! It goes by so fast! Curtis and I enjoy doing a lot of active things if we have the time and the money, lol. We enjoy camping, hiking, dirtbiking, riding on his Vmax, and we look forward to our second trip skydiving! We love being around our friends and family. I picked this month's (May) book(Confessions of a Shopaholic by Sophie Kinsella) because, I'm not much of a reader, so I don't know what's good out there, and I got the idea from Becca. So if the book sucks, blame it on her!

May and June..... What it's June?!

OK so I have been a little behind with the updating but I think I have a pretty good excuse (yes she is very pretty and small). So here are two in one.

First Welcome to our new comer, Jen and Aubrey, we are glad to have you and look forward to your book choices (which as of late not so great, am I right).

Which brings us to Secondly. May's book was Confessions of a Shopaholic by Sophie Kinsella. Personally, I didn't get a chance to read it, (actually I'm still gnawing on Marley and Me, oops) but you can leave your thoughts on it.
Ricci, we would still like a bio though so your not off the hook. You can get it to me via the web master e-mail.

Then Thirdly June's Book The Glass Castle by Jeannette Walls

This was chosen by Becca.

The next meeting will is TBA but I think we will be watching the movie Confessions of a Shopaholic. Will keep you posted.

New Moon

Just in case you needed it. hahaha.

Aprils Book and Bio

Hello my fellow readers. The consensus on last months book was that even though it was somewhat depressing, we all enjoyed reading it. It definitely made me, for one, grateful that I was blessed enough to be born in this free country.

This month's book is:
Here is the Bio:

Cathy:

A little about myself, I am a mother of 5 and and a grandmother of 4, with another on the way. I have been married for 35 years as of this month, WOW! I am currently working as a nurse for the health department, and I love it. I enjoy spending time with my family and friends and spoiling my grand kids. I picked this month”s book, because I was ready for something light and fun and I heard this book was good. This month marks 6 months for book club, and I think it is great that it is still growing strong.
Please feel free to leave your comments on this or last months book, as we all love to hear what you thought and that, after all, is the whole point to the book club.
Have a great Month and a Happy Easter to all!

March Book and Bio

This Months Book: Ashley's Bio:
I am married to Joe, who is currently serving with the Army in Kuwait and is scheduled to be home in February. We live in Utah with our dog, Inga. I am a Registered Nurse working in an ER at a local hospital. I'm really excited about this book club because I am always looking for good books to read and people to discuss them with. I love hearing the different reviews that people give about books that I have read. It is hard for me to choose just one favorite book because it always seems to be challenged when I read another book that I end up loving. However, one book that has remained a top one on my list is To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee. I just finished reading The Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini. It was so fantastic and I recommend it to everyone! I love anything Jane Austen and really loved Ender's Game by Orson Scott Card. The list goes on and on.I'm really excited to get to know everyone in the book club and hear what everyone has to say about the books we read.

Enjoy your Reading!!

Febuary's Review

OK, so I think we all agreed that this was not the funniest book to read, but was a good cure for insomnia. Congrats to all those who finished it! You deserve a hefty pat on the back. I am still determined to finish reading it but have put it aside for now. I liked the perspective but the writing is too much to take in large doses. It never hurts to reach out of the comfort zone every now and then. They can't all be Twilight. Better luck next time. The Meeting this month was short because there were only two of us present due to various conflicts and illness. We hope to have a better turn out next time. Heads up here comes a new month.

February's Book and Bio

Aimee:

Okay first, I chose this book at the recommendation of a friend, I thought I'd step outside of my box. I usually pick books that are lovey, dovey happy ending sort of stuff. I'm also a huge fan of Pride and Prejudice, Twilight, Emma, etc... so I hope this book won't be a downer.

A little about myself, I am from long Island, NY I'm married to a Utah Man (Jess-a hunk of burning love). We have 4 beautiful kids, three girls and one boy. I'm blessed to be a stay at home mom. I love to cook and garden. I hate, hate the cold and can't wait until it is 90 outside at seven o'clock at night! I love the color pink, yeah pink and the color blue, all shades. And someday( hopefully in the near future) I will own a 1975 black Trans AM, yeah that's right, with a huge gold eagle on the hood!! I really hope this book is worth the read! See you all in a few weeks!!

This month's meeting is on the 21st, 6:30 @Aimee's.

January's Book and Bio

Book: The Goose Girl Bio: Jennifer

Happy New Year ladies! I hope that everyone had a fabulous holiday, and are ready to kick in their goals for the new year. One of those goals is to read a book a month for book club right?
This months book is The Goose Girl by Shannon Hale. This book is a retelling of the famous Brothers Grimm fairy tale "The Goose Girl". I chose this book because I love a good fairy tale, (who doesn't) it brings me back to being a kid again. I have also had several friends that have read it, and loved it. So, hopefully we all like it too. It will be an easy read, because it's geared towards children I think.

First of all, this is a shout out to my sister who started this book club! I am one of the out of towners, and wish I could be there to join in all the fun in discussing the books and just hanging out. A little about me, I live in Denver with my husband and 3 great kids (1boy and 2 girls). I am a work at home mom meaning I stay home with my kids, but it's a lot of work. Currently, I am working on finding a 450 hour internship so that I can graduate. This is a task with a husband who works 70-80 hour weeks. I am confident that I will reach my goal either this summer, or in the fall when my 2 oldest are in school full time. When I do graduate, I will have a degree in exercise science and a nutrition minor. I am excited to be able to officially use this to my advantage.

Some of my hobbies are reading of course, jogging/exercise, playing the piano, and every once in a while singing along on Rock Band! My favorite book of all time is Pride and Prejudice, which I am not ashamed to admit I have read 7 times. I just finished reading Gone with the Wind, which is my sisters favorite book, and for me felt more like an accomplishment to finish it, because it's about 1000 pages. It's a good read though, and very well written. My favorite color is a toss up between yellow & green, both of which I will never wear, but I love the colors. My favorite food is fish tacos. I love being outside when it's nice and warm, I'm mostly indoors when it's cold and snowy. Maybe that's from growing up in Florida & Southern California. Well that's it for me.

Enjoy your read this month.

This months meeting will be on Saturday the 24th @ 6:00 at Becca's house. E-mail for directions: mejofred@yahoo.com
